Q – To ship or not to ship?

A – You can take and load up a full container, like you see on the barge behind me. Take 20 ft or 40 ft containers. Load all your furniture up, load all your personal belongings, and send it on the barge.

So, you’re buying a house or a condo here in Maui, and you’re going to be moving here. The question is, “Do I ship my stuff that I have on the Mainland? Or do I buy new stuff?”

It’s always a struggle, and it’s a question they always get.

It takes probably, depending on where you’re at, up to 2-6 weeks to get your containers here in Maui, then you have to unload it.

When we moved here, we brought all of our daughters’ toys, and left all of our furniture at home. I just think that the furnishing you might have in the Mainland may not very well fit in your new home. It may be easier to leave it and sell it there, and then buy here.

Heavy and small items that are easy to ship on a container, and expensive maybe worthwhile to ship.

In my website, there are links to shipping companies to give you an idea of how much it costs. USPS surface is also an option. Just keep in mind, if you go to a shipping office in the Mainland, they will tell you it will take 5-7 days, but that’s not true. It will take you about 5-7 weeks.

Keep that in mind. It will take a little bit longer, but if you’re shipping small stuff other items that are really worthwhile, use the USPS priority boxes.

There are about 10-15 furniture stores in the island, as well as in other stores you can visit in Oahu where you can get other furniture. For all the needs we have Costco, and Walmart, and pretty soon we’ll have target as well.

If you have any other questions about living and moving in Maui, just give me a call or send me an email. You can also visit my website for more information.
